What Is Gland Packing?

Gland packing, also known as compression packing or stuffing box packing, is a sealing material used to control fluid or gas leakage around rotating shafts and reciprocating or stationary valve stems. The packing is typically manufactured from braided fibres, formed into a square or rectangular cross-section and installed within a stuffing box surrounding the shaft or stem. When the gland follower is tightened, axial compression causes the packing to expand radially against the shaft and stuffing box walls, creating a controlled sealing interface.

Unlike many mechanical seals, traditional gland packing is adjustable and can accommodate certain variations in shaft condition, movement and operating environment. However, the correct packing construction, installation method and gland adjustment are essential for reliable performance.

Gland packing is widely used in pumps, valves, mixers, agitators and other industrial equipment where leakage control, maintainability and resistance to the operating media are important.

Gland Packing Material Selection

Choosing the correct compression packing material is essential for achieving reliable sealing performance and controlling wear, friction and leakage.

Different packing fibres and impregnation treatments offer different levels of resistance to chemicals, abrasion, pressure and operating temperatures.

Material How It Seals Relative Temperature Capability Abrasion Resistance Typically Specified For
PTFE Gland Packing Braided PTFE fibres compress around the shaft or valve stem, providing a chemically resistant, low-friction sealing interface. Moderate to high Lower to moderate Chemical pumps, industrial valves, water treatment and aggressive media
Graphite Gland Packing Compressible graphite conforms to the sealing surfaces while conducting heat away from the contact area. High Lower to moderate Steam valves, power generation, high-temperature process equipment
Aramid Gland Packing High-strength braided fibres form a durable sealing interface capable of resisting mechanical wear from abrasive media. Moderate to high Higher Slurry pumps, wastewater treatment, abrasive industrial processing
Carbon Fibre Gland Packing Braided carbon fibres provide a stable sealing structure with good heat transfer and resistance to mechanical loading. High Moderate to higher Industrial pumps, process valves, elevated-temperature sealing
Graphited PTFE Gland Packing Graphite-filled PTFE fibres combine chemical resistance with low friction and improved heat dissipation. Moderate to high Moderate Rotating equipment, chemical pumps, general process applications
Synthetic Fibre Gland Packing Braided synthetic fibres compress around the shaft, with suitable impregnation supporting lubrication and leakage control. Grade dependent Moderate Water pumps, industrial machinery, general-purpose sealing

The characteristics above are indicative. Actual performance depends on the fibre construction, impregnation, lubrication, operating speed, pressure and temperature.

The correct packing should always be selected against the complete operating conditions.

How Does Gland Packing Work?

Gland packing creates a seal by applying controlled compression to packing rings installed within the equipment stuffing box. The packing surrounds a rotating shaft or valve stem, creating resistance to fluid movement through the sealing chamber. As the gland follower is tightened, the packing compresses and expands against the shaft and surrounding housing. The resulting contact pressure restricts leakage while allowing the equipment to operate.

Compression and Sealing Pressure

Correct gland compression is essential.

Insufficient compression can result in excessive leakage, while over-tightening can increase friction, operating temperature, shaft wear and premature packing failure. The required compression depends on the packing construction, equipment design and application.

Friction and Lubrication

In rotating equipment, packing generates friction as the shaft moves against the sealing material.

Suitable lubrication and heat removal are therefore important for maintaining performance. Certain packing materials incorporate PTFE, graphite or other lubricating treatments to reduce friction and support reliable operation.

Leakage Control

Packed pumps frequently require controlled leakage to provide cooling and lubrication at the shaft interface. The correct leakage rate depends on the equipment and packing design.

Valve stem packing, by comparison, may be designed to achieve very low leakage under appropriate operating conditions. Packing adjustment should always follow the equipment manufacturer’s recommendations.

Pump Gland Packing

Pump gland packing is used to control leakage around rotating pump shafts in equipment handling liquids, slurries and industrial process media. The packing material must withstand the fluid being pumped while maintaining acceptable friction, wear and leakage characteristics.

Typical applications include:

PTFE, graphited PTFE, aramid and carbon-based materials are frequently selected for pump applications, depending on the operating conditions. Where abrasive fluids are present, packing construction and shaft protection become particularly important.

For higher shaft speeds or demanding duty cycles, the relationship between pressure, shaft speed, heat generation and lubrication must be assessed.

Valve Gland Packing

Valve gland packing is installed around a valve stem to control leakage between the pressurised process system and the surrounding environment. Unlike rotating pump packing, valve packing commonly operates with limited or intermittent stem movement. Depending on the application, it may need to accommodate high temperatures, steam, aggressive chemicals, pressure cycling or stringent fugitive-emission requirements.

Typical applications include:

Graphite, PTFE and specialist composite constructions are commonly used for valve packing. Where low-emission performance or a particular industry specification is required, the complete packing arrangement and supporting certification should be reviewed.

Standard and Specialist Compression Packing

Industrial gland packing is available in a variety of fibre constructions, braid patterns and impregnation treatments. These characteristics influence the material's resistance to friction, chemical attack, abrasion, pressure and operating temperature.International Seal can review requirements for standard and specialist compression packing constructions, including:

Packing can also incorporate lubricating and dispersion treatments designed to improve sealing performance in particular operating environments. Availability depends on the required material, braid construction, packing dimensions and quantity.

Gland Packing Sizes & Specifications

Compression packing is commonly supplied in square-section braided lengths, which are subsequently cut into individual packing rings. The correct cross-sectional size is determined by the dimensions of the shaft and stuffing box. Packing that is too small may not develop sufficient sealing pressure, while oversized packing can be difficult to install correctly and may cause excessive compression.

When specifying gland packing, the following details should be considered:
