Seals & O-Rings for Automotive Applications

International Seal provides high quality sealing components for automotive systems requiring durability, consistency and dependable performance. Automotive seals operate under constant exposure to heat, oil, fuel, coolant and vibration, often across hundreds of thousands of cycles. Selecting the right compound for the fluid and temperature range is what separates a seal that lasts the life of the component from one that becomes a warranty claim.

Built for Production, Performance & Long-Term Reliability

Sealing for EV and Thermal Management Systems

Electrification changes the sealing requirement rather than removing it. Battery coolant circuits, thermal management loops, power electronics housings and charging interfaces all need sealing, and the duty is different from an internal combustion engine.

Coolant systems typically run water-glycol rather than oil, which rules out some hydrocarbon elastomers and points towards EPDM. Battery and electronics enclosures need long-term sealing against moisture and dust with very low compression set, because the joint is rarely serviced across the life of the vehicle. Fast-charging and power electronics add thermal cycling, where a compound that takes permanent set will leak long before the assembly wears out.

Whether the application is conventional powertrain, fuel and cooling, or an EV thermal circuit, send us the fluid, the temperature range and the expected service life and we will recommend a compound. Where low-temperature performance matters, our extreme cold FKM O-rings cover conditions where standard FKM loses sealing force.

Materials for Automotive Applications

Material choice in automotive sealing is driven by the fluid in contact, the operating temperature and the service life expected. The wrong elastomer in an oil or fuel circuit will swell, harden or fail early.

If you are unsure which compound suits your system, send us the fluid, temperature range and pressure and we will make a recommendation.

Industry Standards & Compliance

Components are supplied against the material and dimensional standards automotive buyers specify, including ASTM D2000 / SAE J200 material classifications, ISO 3601 and DIN 3771 sizing, as well as customer drawings and application-specific specifications.

Where a programme requires it, we source from manufacturing partners holding IATF 16949 and ISO 9001 certification, and can provide their certification and supporting material documentation alongside the parts. Confirm the requirement at enquiry stage.

Automotive Sealing FAQs

Which O-ring material is used for automotive fuel systems?

NBR for petrol, mineral oils and greases at moderate temperature and competitive cost. FKM where the temperature is higher or the fuel more aggressive, including ethanol-blended fuels. The right choice depends on the fuel, the temperature range and the expected service life.

What is HNBR used for in automotive applications?

HNBR offers better heat and ozone resistance than standard nitrile, which is why it is specified for timing systems, air conditioning circuits and under-bonnet duties where NBR would harden or crack over time.

Which seal material is compatible with brake fluid and coolant?

EPDM. Petroleum-based elastomers such as NBR are attacked by brake fluid and are unsuitable for water-glycol coolant circuits, so EPDM is the standard choice for both.

What seals are used in EV thermal management systems?

Typically EPDM for water-glycol coolant circuits, with silicone and FKM used where temperature or chemical exposure demands it. Battery and power electronics enclosures need low compression set for long-term sealing in joints that are rarely serviced. Send us the fluid, temperature range and service life required.

Do you supply O-rings to ASTM D2000 and ISO 3601?

Yes. Components are supplied against the material and dimensional standards automotive buyers specify, including ASTM D2000 / SAE J200 material classification, ISO 3601 O-ring dimensions and DIN 3771. Material certification and dimensional reports are available on request.

Can you supply both production volumes and prototypes?

Yes. We work to low minimum order quantities, and where a part has to be tooled from scratch our 30-day prototype programme delivers moulded parts considerably faster than typical industry lead times. Tell us whether the requirement is prototype, first-article or production.
