Sealing Compound Reference: Elastomer, PTFE and Metal Seal Grades

International Seal supplies over 250 sealing compounds, each with its own IS compound code. The range covers NBR, HNBR, EPDM, FKM, FFKM, silicone, fluorosilicone, AFLAS®, polyurethane and specialist elastomers, plus PTFE, engineering plastics, metal seal alloys and technical ceramics.

Quote an IS code on your enquiry, drawing or purchase order, and we supply the same formulation, hardness and colour on every repeat order, with matching documentation. If you only have another supplier’s code, or just a colour and hardness, send it and we’ll identify the equivalent grade.

How to Use This Reference

Specifying a new part — Pick the material family from the operating conditions first, then the grade. Our chemical compatibility guide and elastomer temperature range guide cover the family-level decision.

Replacing an existing part — If you have an International Seal compound code, quote it. If you have a competitor’s code or only a colour and hardness, send what you have and we will identify an equivalent.

Compliance requirements — FDA, EU 1935/2004, 3-A, USP Class VI, WRAS, NSF 61, NORSOK and detectable grades are tagged on each grade and gathered in the approvals index at the end of the page. State the requirement at enquiry stage so the correct grade is quoted from the outset.

Documentation — Material data sheets and test reports are available on request for the grades listed. Compliance applies to a specific grade, not to a material family as a whole.

NBR Compounds

NBR (nitrile rubber) is the most widely used sealing elastomer. It is the default choice for mineral oils, hydraulic fluids, fuels, greases and water, offering good compression set, tear and abrasion resistance at the lowest cost of the oil-resistant rubbers.

Our NBR range runs from 50 to 90 Shore A. It includes FDA and 3-A grades for food plants, a WRAS grade for UK drinking water, an anti-static grade, an EN 549 gas grade and aerospace grades to AMS specifications.

FFKM (Perfluoroelastomer) Compounds

FFKM (perfluoroelastomer) has the broadest chemical and temperature resistance of any elastomer. It seals reliably in strong acids, bases, solvents, amines, steam and process chemicals that attack FKM and EPDM, and high-temperature grades serve to +330°C.

FFKM is specified where seal failure is expensive, because its longer service life outweighs the higher part cost. Our range covers 60 to 90 Shore A. It includes general-purpose, high-temperature, steam, amine-resistant and low-temperature (to -40°C) grades, plus FDA, USP Class VI, 3-A, semiconductor and NORSOK rapid gas decompression grades.

Silicone (VMQ) Compounds

Silicone (VMQ) offers the widest temperature range of the common elastomers, typically -60°C to +200°C. It is physiologically inert, odourless and tasteless, which makes it the standard choice for food, medical and laboratory equipment. Platinum-cured grades give the highest purity.

Silicone has low tear and abrasion strength, so it suits static seals and gaskets rather than dynamic duty. Our range runs from 30 to 80 Shore A. It includes FDA grades across the hardness range, USP Class VI platinum-cured silicone, medical-grade LSR and an aerospace grade to AMS specifications.

Metal & X-ray Detectable Compounds

Metal and X-ray detectable seals contain a dispersed additive that makes fragments visible to standard metal detectors and X-ray inspection systems. A damaged seal is caught before it reaches the product. Food, beverage and pharmaceutical plants specify them as part of foreign-body control under HACCP and retailer standards such as BRCGS.

Blue is the standard food-industry colour because it contrasts with most foods; other colours are used for zoning. Our detectable range covers NBR, FKM, EPDM and silicone from 70 to 90 Shore A, with FDA, EU 1935/2004 and 3-A grades.

PTFE & Engineering Plastics

PTFE is chemically inert to almost all industrial media and serves from -200°C to +260°C with very low friction. That makes it the material of choice for chemical seals, gaskets, back-up rings and valve seats.

Virgin PTFE gives the highest purity. Fillers improve wear and creep resistance: glass and carbon for general duty, bronze for hydraulic wear and back-up rings, and graphite for dry running. PEEK adds strength and stiffness for high-pressure back-up rings and valve seats. FEP- and PFA-encapsulated O-rings combine fluoropolymer chemical resistance with an elastomer core. Our range includes an FDA and EU 10/2011 virgin PTFE grade.

Metal Seal Alloys & Platings

Metal seals are used where no elastomer survives: extreme temperatures, high vacuum, radiation or very high pressure. Choose the alloy for temperature, strength and corrosion resistance, then the plating for seating load and leak rate.

Stainless steels cover general duty. Alloy X-750 and Alloy 718 keep their spring properties and strength at high temperature. Alloy 400 and Alloy C-276 resist seawater and aggressive chemicals. Quote the alloy code with a plating suffix: for example, M110-AG is Alloy X-750 with silver plating.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an International Seal compound code?

Every grade we supply has a unique IS compound code, such as E101 or FFKM200. Quote it on your enquiry, drawing or purchase order, and you receive the same formulation, hardness and colour on every repeat order, with matching documentation. The code also makes it simple to specify the same seal across sites.

Which compound do I need for food contact: FDA, EU 1935/2004 or 3-A?

It depends on where the product is sold and what your customer audits against. FDA 21 CFR 177.2600 is the US requirement and the most widely requested worldwide. EU 1935/2004 is the legal framework for food-contact materials in the EU and UK, supported by a Declaration of Compliance. 3-A Sanitary Standard 18 is common in dairy equipment. E101, V118, CD102 and CD201 hold both FDA and EU 1935/2004.

What is the difference between FKM, FFKM and AFLAS®?

FKM is a fluoroelastomer with excellent resistance to oils, fuels and many chemicals to about +200°C, and it is the standard high-performance choice. FFKM is fully fluorinated, so it resists almost all chemicals and reaches +330°C on high-temperature grades, at a much higher price. AFLAS® (FEPM) resists steam, amines, strong bases and sour gas that attack FKM, but it is weaker in aromatic hydrocarbons.

Which hardness should I choose?

70 Shore A suits most O-rings and seals. Choose 50–60 Shore A for low closing force, soft flanges or uneven surfaces. Choose 80–90 Shore A for high pressure or a larger extrusion gap. Other hardnesses are available on request in most families.

Do you supply seals approved for drinking water?

Yes. E120 is a peroxide-cured EPDM 70 approved to WRAS (UK), KTW-BWGL and DVGW W270 (Germany), ACS (France) and NSF/ANSI 61 (North America), so one grade covers most European and US drinking water projects. E121 (EPDM 80) and N140 (NBR 75) also hold WRAS approval.

Can you supply seals to AMS aerospace specifications?

Yes. We list FKM grades to AMS 7276 and AMS-R-83248, fluorosilicone to AMS-R-25988, and other AMS and NAS grades in NBR, EPDM, silicone and CR. Certificates of conformance are supplied on request. Send the specification, class and size, and we'll confirm the grade.

Why are metal-detectable seals blue?

Blue is rare in natural foods, so a blue fragment stands out on the line and during visual checks. That is why blue is the usual colour for food-contact seals and plastics. Metal-detectable seals add a second safeguard, because metal detectors and X-ray systems can also find the fragment. Other colours are used for zoning, such as separating raw and cooked areas.

Need Help Selecting a Compound?

Send us the process media, temperature range, pressure, hardness and any approval you need, and we'll recommend a grade from this reference. Replacing an existing seal? A sample, photo, drawing or another supplier's part number is usually enough to identify it.
