Screen Gaskets for Sanitary Tri-Clamp Connections
Sanitary screen gaskets, also called mesh gaskets, filter gaskets or sock screens, combine a Tri-Clamp gasket with an integrated stainless-steel mesh so that inline screening happens at the connection itself, without a separate filter housing. International Seal supplies screen gaskets for sanitary Tri-Clamp process connections used throughout food, beverage, dairy and hygienic processing systems. Screen gaskets combine a sealing gasket with an integrated wire mesh, allowing inline particulate screening to be incorporated directly into the process connection.
Stocked in EPDM, with standard sizes from 1″ to 4″ and 10, 20, 40, 60, 80 and 100 mesh options. Other gasket materials are available to order. Screen gaskets (also referred to as mesh gaskets or sanitary mesh filters) are selected according to the connection size, process media, required level of screening, cleaning regime and operating conditions. Please confirm availability for your required size and mesh specification when requesting a quotation.

Materials
The gasket material should be selected according to the process media, operating temperature, cleaning regime and regulatory requirements, while the mesh specification should be chosen according to the level of particulate filtration required.
| Material | Typical Applications |
|---|---|
| EPDM | Water, hot water, steam and hygienic processing |
| FKM | Oils, chemicals and elevated temperatures |
| PTFE | Broad chemical resistance |
The correct material should always be selected against the complete operating conditions rather than the product media alone. For additional guidance, see our Chemical Compatibility Guide and Elastomer Temperature Range Guide.
Typical Applications
Sanitary screen gaskets are commonly used where a simple inline method of removing particulates or protecting downstream process equipment is required. Because the filtration element is incorporated directly into the hygienic connection, screen gaskets can provide a compact alternative to installing a separate filtration housing for suitable applications.
Typical applications include:
- Food & Beverage Process Lines
- Dairy Processing Equipment
- Breweries & Beverage Systems
- Pumps, Valves & Tanks
- CIP Cleaning Systems
- Pharmaceutical & Hygienic Processing
The correct mesh size should be selected according to the particle size to be retained, required flow rate and pressure conditions of the application.
Selecting the Correct Mesh
Mesh size describes the fineness of the screen used within the gasket and influences both particle retention and flow through the process line. Coarser mesh generally provides greater open area and lower flow restriction, while finer mesh can retain smaller particles but may increase pressure drop and require more frequent inspection or cleaning.
Selection should take account of the expected particulate size, process media, flow requirements and available system pressure. Where the required mesh size is unknown, International Seal can assist with selection based on the application and the approximate size of the particles that need to be retained.
Mesh Size Guide
Mesh size refers to the number of openings per linear inch. Actual aperture size and filtration performance will also depend on factors including wire diameter, screen construction and operating conditions.
| Mesh Size | Screening Level | Typical Applications |
|---|---|---|
| 10 Mesh | Coarse | Larger particles and product protection |
| 20 Mesh | Coarse–Medium | General process screening |
| 40 Mesh | Medium | Smaller particulates and general filtration |
| 60 Mesh | Medium–Fine | Finer particulate control |
| 80 Mesh | Fine | Fine screening applications |
| 100 Mesh | Very Fine | Fine particulate removal |
Mesh size indicates the number of openings per linear inch. Actual aperture and filtration performance can vary according to wire diameter, screen construction and operating conditions.
