RJT Seals & Joint Rings
RJT, or Ring Joint Type, is a hygienic union system commonly used across dairy processing, food & beverage equipment. The RJT joint ring sits within the union and creates the seal between the mating components when the connection is tightened. Correct material selection is important because the gasket may be exposed to the process product, cleaning chemicals, hot water, steam and repeated maintenance cycles.
International Seal supplies RJT seals and RJT joint rings for hygienic process pipework used throughout the dairy, pharmaceutical, food & beverage industries. Designed for Ring Joint Type (RJT) unions to BS 4825 Part 5, our RJT sealing range is available in standard sizes from 1″ to 4″, with a wide choice of elastomer and specialist materials to suit different process media, temperatures and hygiene requirements.

Materials
RJT seals are available in a range of elastomer and specialist materials, allowing the gasket to be selected according to the process media, temperature, cleaning regime and regulatory requirements.
| Material | Typical Applications |
|---|---|
| NBR | Oils, fats and general-purpose applications |
| EPDM | Water, hot water, steam and hygienic processing |
| FKM | Oils, chemicals and elevated temperatures |
The correct material should always be selected against the complete operating conditions rather than the product media alone. For additional guidance, see our Chemical Compatibility Guide and Elastomer Temperature Range Guide.
Typical Applications
RJT joint rings are widely used throughout hygienic process pipework where connections need to be securely sealed while still allowing equipment to be dismantled for cleaning, inspection and maintenance.
They are particularly common across established food, beverage and dairy processing systems, where RJT unions continue to be used on pipelines, vessels and process equipment carrying both finished products and cleaning media.
- Food & Beverage Process Lines
- Dairy Processing Equipment
- Breweries & Beverage Systems
- Pumps, Valves & Tanks
- CIP Cleaning Systems
- Pharmaceutical & Hygienic Processing
The correct RJT seal material should be selected according to the product media, cleaning chemicals, operating temperature and any regulatory requirements of the application.
Metal Detectable RJT Seals
Metal detectable RJT joint rings are available for food, beverage and other processing environments where foreign-body contamination control forms part of the production system.
Detectable compounds incorporate specialist additives intended to improve the ability of inspection equipment to identify fragments of sealing material if a gasket becomes damaged during production. Detectable options are available across selected elastomer grades, including materials suitable for common hygienic sealing applications.
Detection capability depends on the compound, fragment size, product being inspected and the sensitivity and configuration of the inspection equipment. Detectable seals should therefore be validated on the customer’s own production system.
RJT Seal FAQs
What does RJT stand for?
Ring Joint Type. It is a threaded hygienic union system standardised in the UK under BS 4825 Part 5 and used widely across dairy, food and beverage processing.
What is the difference between an RJT seal and an RJT joint ring?
They are the same component. RJT seal, RJT joint ring and RJT gasket all describe the ring that sits in the union and seals when the connection is tightened.
Are RJT and IDF seals interchangeable?
No. They are different union systems with different sealing profiles and dimensions. We supply RJT seals; we do not supply IDF.
Which materials are available for RJT seals?
NBR, EPDM and FKM are our standard RJT materials, with silicone and PTFE also available. Metal and X-ray detectable compounds are available across selected grades. Material documentation can be provided on request.
Do you hold RJT seals in UK stock?
Core RJT sizes are held in UK stock for same-day dispatch. Send the size, material and quantity and we will confirm stock and lead time.
Need an RJT Seal?
Send us the size, material and quantity you need, or simply send a photo if you’re unsure which RJT seal you have. We can help identify the correct seal and provide pricing, availability and lead time.
